Collaborative initiatives across the region are positioning Northwest Indiana for considerable economic growth. An important site selection factor for many companies is access to talent in the form of an educated and skilled workforce. The South Shore Line Double Track initiative will make Northwest Indiana a more attractive area for educated and skilled workers to live, by facilitating easier access to work, education, and recreation across the region and in Chicago. To meet the needs of a growing skilled workforce, the region needs a sufficient quantity, quality, and variety of housing. Indiana University Northwest will establish a team of researchers who will perform an extensive analysis of the current housing market and inventory and construction mix as well as the changing dynamics of local markets. This housing study will identify strengths and weaknesses in the housing market of Northwest Indiana to support regional development organizations as well as the Greater Northwest Indiana Association of REALTORS in advocating for and developing specific housing strategies across the seven-county region to better meet future economic growth. The study will begin on May 1, 2023, and be completed by August 31, 2024.
